Premiere date: December 14, on platforms like Hulu, Samsung TV Plus, DirecTV, Tubi, and DISH.
How did you get involved in the project?
TDN noticed my “Drew It Yourself” series on Instagram, and when concepting this format and brainstorming with an expert in the space, the network reached out thinking I was a great fit. We’ve found that many homeowners feel stuck in their homes and the to-do list just keeps getting longer. We’re here to help them through a series of DIY dates around the home.
What takeaways do you think viewers will get from the show?
Hopefully, viewers will feel less intimidated by projects in their homes. Many people just put up with things around their homes that aren’t working for them because they either feel overwhelmed or are scared to make a mistake. My goal for this show is that people feel more empowered to tackle projects and love their homes as opposed to merely living in them.
Have you always been interested in home design?
I have always been a bit of a homebody so the idea of making my house as comfortable as possible has always appealed to me. Some of the choices that were made along the way might not have been the best but I have always tried to make whatever space I was living in (apartment, home, hotel, tour bus) work for me.
How would you describe the style of your own home—and who makes the design decisions?
I have no idea what our style is called but everything about it is intended to be comfortable and inviting. My wife and I make decisions together – at least on the bigger things. I don’t micromanage accessories and pillows. That’s her domain. I typically hold my tongue unless I just really don’t like something.
How did you get involved with DIY projects, and what do you love about them?
I started learning about DIY and taking on projects after I got taken for a ride by a contractor. It’s an unfortunate and far too common occurrence. I was a young, first-time homeowner and knew nothing and they told me they had completed the job so I paid them. Come to find out they had only done the first of about 5 steps. I was so mad that I promised myself that I would learn about these types of things so I’d never be taken advantage of again. That is a sad way to discover something that brings me a lot of joy but I’m glad it happened. The sense of accomplishment that you feel after finishing a project is unrivaled. And with every project you do, your connection to your home grows.
What does it mean to you to “Date Your House”—why is that important for renters and homeowners?
Dating your house means getting to know it. Seeing how it works or behaves and then figuring out how that works with your life or style. Sometimes love happens quickly. Sometimes it takes a while. Like in any relationship, you have to invest the time and pay attention.
What’s the most memorable DIY project/”Date” you’ve ever pulled off? Is anything off-limits?
Most recently I gutted my son’s bathroom and completely renovated it with a walk-in shower and vaulted ceilings. It was a tiny, dark space that now feels much bigger and brighter. Nothing is off limits but I now know how long projects take when you are doing them by yourself so I have become a bit more selective on when I start them. I used to just put a hole in the wall and then use that as an excuse to have to take the whole wall down. I still hate drywall though.
